The Numatic Henry is one of those products that has been around so long it is easy to overlook. The round red canister, the face on the front, the cloth bag: it looks like something from a school cleaning cupboard. And yet it regularly appears on professional construction sites, in workshops, and in tradespeople vans alongside tools that cost ten times as much. There is a reason for that.
What makes the Henry genuinely good
The motor. Numatic manufactures their own motors in the UK, and the specification on the Henry is overbuilt for the price point. The bypass motor design keeps the airflow for filtration completely separate from the motor cooling, which means the motor runs cool even under sustained use.
The capacity. A standard Henry holds 9 litres. Some models hold 15. For trade and site use, capacity matters because you are not stopping to empty it every ten minutes.
The build. The casework is thick, the wheels are solid, and the hose connections are robust. Henry vacuums get dropped, dragged across rough floors, stood on by accident, and stuffed into vans. They keep working.
Where it is less suitable
The Henry is not a dust extractor. For tasks that generate fine silica dust, wood dust from hardwoods, or any material regulated under COSHH, you need a vacuum with M-class or H-class filtration certification. The Henry handles general debris, plaster dust in lower concentrations, and general site cleaning well.
Which Henry model to buy
The HVR200 is the standard model and handles most trade applications without issue. The HVR200A with the allergy filter is worth the marginal price difference if you are working in occupied buildings where dust in the air is a concern.
The real reason tradespeople keep buying them
Bags and parts are available everywhere. Numatic spares are stocked by most tool shops in the UK. The machine is straightforward to service and has been manufactured to the same basic design for decades.
They also hold their resale value surprisingly well. A three-year-old Henry in good condition sells for a meaningful fraction of its original price.
